LaCrosse Ursa ES GTX Review

-

I think a hunter’s boots are the most personal piece of gear we own. Rifles can be shared. Optics can be upgraded. Packs can be swapped out. Boots? Boots are the sole of every hunter (forgive me).

Seriously, though, boots are a commitment. Get it wrong, and nothing else matters. You won’t remember the animal or the shot, just the pain in your feet with every step. But when you get it right, when your feet are comfortable, and your mind is clear, you stop thinking about them entirely.  That’s when the hunt truly opens.

Boots Built to Move

As I write this, I’m sitting in a hotel room, boots on, getting ready to step out the door and chase aoudad up and down the canyons, rockslides, and mountains of New Mexico.

My boots are filthy. And they should be. These same boots, LaCrosse Ursa ES GTX, have supported me for two years while chasing mountain lions in Arizona, aoudad in West Texas, Himalayan tahr and red deer stag in New Zealand, and scimitar oryx in central Texas.

I’ve got other boots, good ones. But I don’t wear them for much more than novelty.

Why? My Ursa’s have never let me down, and they’re fun to wear.

Flexible & Form Fitting

Think of the most comfortable hiking boot you can buy, then give it body armor, with flex. That is the Ursa. The upper is constructed from a combination of premium nubuck leather and abrasion-resistant textile, chosen for both durability and flex. This design shields your feet from sharp rocks and brush while still allowing free movement.

It’s proven itself on West Texas rocks, cactus, and straight-up canyon climbs. They’ve helped me ascend and descend steep New Zealand peaks. They’ve helped me (almost) keep up with hound dogs chasing a mountain lion all over the Arizona mountains. They’ve remained waterproof and sticky, and after every trip, the only barking around my house comes from my dogs.

Lots of boots can handle rugged terrain, but they’re all stiffer than a Baptist preacher on Sunday morning. The Ursa’s are just as tough, they’re just way more personable.

It feels closer to an athletic shoe than a traditional mountain boot, giving you agility without losing crucial support when the terrain gets steep. That balance matters more than most people realize.

Traction is where most boots either earn their reputation or fail. The Vibram Mountaineering outsole on the Ursa is engineered for maximum grip and durability on uneven, rocky, or muddy surfaces. Vibram is renowned for its rubber compounds and lug patterns specifically designed for mountain environments, which give the Ursa reliable traction.

Side-hilling loose terrain, climbing rock, sliding down shale, these boots hold or release when needed. That’s a hard thing to engineer.

Protects Feet From the Elements

Water is always part of the equation. The GORE-TEX lining is a waterproof and breathable membrane that allows sweat vapor to escape while blocking external moisture. This technology is a gold standard in outdoor footwear, keeping your feet dry in rain, across creek crossings, and on wet grass without overheating.

Durability is where honesty matters. And the Ursa’s have never tapped out. The uppers are tough, resisting wear from rock, brush, and unforgiving terrain, so I can hunt confidently in difficult conditions. But these aren’t rebuildable boots.

The dual-density polyurethane midsole is engineered to absorb shock and provide cushioning mile after mile, supporting your feet on long hikes over rough ground. Like all high-performance midsoles, it will compress over time as the miles add up.

They’re built to perform, not to sit on a shelf waiting to be resoled 20 years from now.

Boots That Do Their Job

Every hunter’s story is written step by step, and every step is shaped by the boots we trust. Looking back on two years of hunting a lifetime of trophies, not once have I ever questioned my grip, the safety of my feet, or the stamina in my step because of my boots.

Bottom line? The best boots provide comfort, stability and traction. They let you focus on the hunt instead of your feet. For the past two years, no boot has done that better for me than my Ursas.
