After WW II, the French police gradually faced an issue. Military grade firearms left over from the occupation and liberation were being used by violent criminals. These criminals could outgun police personnel. In response, French police agencies gradually accepted the idea of arming their personnel, traditionally equipped with .32 ACP pistols, with heavy-duty revolvers chambered in .357 Magnum. Introduced in 1972, the MR 73 was designed for police tactical unit use. It is known for having formerly been the standard issue sidearm of the French National Gendarmerie. In 2021, Beretta began to import the MR 73 Gendarmerie and the MR 73 Sport into the United States. But like so many things, supplies became scarce.

Each MR73 is built using forged ordnance-certified steel, cold hammer-forged barrels, and precision-machined 5-axis CNC technology. Then it is hand-fitted and hand-polished by master gunsmiths to exacting standards. The MR73’s signature double-action trigger system features a fully adjustable trigger weight. It is widely praised for being the smoothest in the world. Every revolver is individually proof-tested at pressures 30% higher than CIP specifications. It is accuracy-tested at 15 to 25 meters, with MATCH models shipping with a test target ensuring no group exceeds 0.8″ with selected ammo.
