As Saint Patrick’s Day quickly approaches, many people’s minds turn to the beverages they will be consuming. While the standard bar fare will be the go-to for most, others like to stretch their palate a bit in search of adventure. For my fellow thrill seekers, might I suggest the Gonster?
The Gonster – For the Beverage Curious
The Gonster is the product of internet ingenuity (or hatred for mankind, depending on opinion). The drink blends two very different beverages. My beloved Guinness and the highly caffeinated Monster Energy drink. Together, they create a layered cocktail that has garnered praise and repulsion amongst those courageous enough to give it a sip.

At its simplest, a Gonster is made by pouring roughly half a glass of Monster Nitro extra dry into a pint glass and then carefully floating Guinness on top. The best way to get the interesting separated appearance is to slowly pour the Guinness over the back of a spoon, gently into the awaiting Monster. When done correctly, the drink forms two distinct layers. The bright green welcome to Saint Patrick’s Day at the bottom and the dark, creamy Guinness resting above it. The visual contrast alone is part of the drink’s appeal, giving it an unusual “two-tone” appearance.
Citrus and Malt
Flavor-wise, the Gonster is an interesting creature. The Guinness brings well-known roasted malt flavors, while the Monster adds some sweetness and citrus acidity. The result is a drink that combines creamy stout texture with fizzy sweetness. To the die-hard Guinness fans, it is nothing short of blasphemy. However, for the alcohol-curious, it has become a popular drink. For those who may want the taste without the work, Monster actually has its own canned version of Gonster for your drinking pleasure.

In tribute to Saint Patrick’s Day, the brave members of The Bottom Shelf (including myself) gave the Gonster a spin. Reactions were mixed but entertaining to say the least. We all agreed it was not the worst thing we had tried in our time on the show, and each of us finished our drinks.
