When I first saw the CRKT Provoke X at SHOT Show in January 2025, it was definitely something different. Not only was it getting a ton of attention, but people wanted it immediately. It stole the show at the CRKT booth. However, it was unobtainable!
The CRKT Provoke X
The word on the street was that CRKT had moved back the release date to March. No worries. The world has to wait, so can I. The delays ensued, and patience wore thin, accompanied by excitement. I even heard on a video that there were approximately 94 iterations of the axe before everyone was satisfied.
I’ll say, I sure am glad they waited. When I got mine, I understood the wait and grew a new respect for the CRKT team.

Not Your Grandpa’s Hatchet
The Provoke X Morphing Axe is built for professionals. Law enforcement, military, and first responders need a compact breaching tool that deploys instantly under pressure. Its design favors tactical use rather than weekend camping trips or bushcraft chores.
You won’t be splitting logs or carving tent stakes with this axe. Instead, it’s engineered to smash barriers, break through obstacles, and provide a defensive edge when seconds matter. The Provoke X thrives in high-stakes environments where durability and speed are non-negotiable.

This isn’t a campfire companion—it’s a purpose-built tool for breaching and self-defense.
An Axe Engineered for Impact
The Provoke X Morphing Axe is compact but built for impact. Blade length measures 1.84 inches, with a thickness of 0.12 inches. Both the overall length and the closed length are 8.69 inches, making it pocket-friendly yet formidable. At 13.20 ounces, it carries solid heft without feeling clumsy.

The handle overlays are glass-reinforced for durability, giving you grip and resilience in one sleek package. The blade is crafted from SUJ2 steel, chosen for its exceptional toughness and resistance to deformation. This steel thrives under repeated impact, making it perfect for a tool designed to strike hard and keep striking. A titanium nitride finish adds corrosion resistance, reduces wear, and gives the blade a stealthy, battle-ready look.
The Morphing Edge
Kinematic® is CRKT’s signature innovation. With a flick of the wrist, the blade morphs from hidden to deployed in one fluid motion. It’s fast, intuitive, and engineered to feel natural—no awkward fumbling. Just a clean mechanical snap that makes you grin every time.
Deploying the Provoke X

Deployment is straightforward but demands respect. Push, flick, and the blade locks open with the Deadbolt® system, delivering brute strength and easy release. Closing the axe automatically engages the safety, preventing accidental openings.
Carry options include an adjustable pocket clip, available in left- or right-handed configurations. Conceal it, deploy it, and keep it secure until the moment calls!
Hard Use Report
I’ve had access to this 50-year-old abandoned building in the oddest place in the woods. It looks like it’s directly out of a cheap horror movie. It also resembles a training structure for LEO and the military. There was a lot of wood, brick, light metal, and debris to test the axe and spike on.
This part of the testing was more like a stress reliever. I went right for a section of fire-hardened (burnt) wood and tested how the axe bit along with the grain. Next, I found another section of untouched wood and sank the axe blade deep across the grain.

I wore gloves, yet was still surprised at the low shock factor. Like a kid in a toy shop, my eyes and attention were drawn to something different. Bricks and metal were next!
The spike wasn’t beveled, which gave it strength as I plunged it into an old paint can. Next to it was a scrap piece of metal sheeting, most likely from an awning. A seasoned, yet weathered wooden plank was the next test piece, although I didn’t doubt the spike at this point.

I grabbed a brick from a pile and went to town. If the tool failed, it would be here. I took about three whacks before the brick broke into a few chunks, leaving the spike unscathed. The SUJ2 steel is for impact, and toughness is its forte!

Safety Tip: I used sunglasses and heavy-duty gloves for the hard-use test!
The Provoke X vs Pig
Pigs are often used in research and self-defense training because their biology mirrors humans in uncanny ways. Their skin thickness, muscle density, and bone structure closely resemble ours, making them ideal stand-ins for realistic testing. That similarity explains why blades and impact tools are often trialed on store-bought pork cuts.
To evaluate the Provoke X Morphing Axe, I used a pork shoulder. The first strike drove the spike cleanly through the fat cap, slicing deep into the flesh beneath. The second test was even more telling—the spike bit straight into bone, locking in with brutal authority. Both results were astonishing, proving the axe’s penetration power and impact capability in a way that raw specs alone can’t capture.
It was carnitas taco night, then pork kabobs later in the week. I’m not one to waste good pork.

Meet the Man
Designer Joe Caswell from Newbury Park, California, is known for his fearless approach to knife design. Unlike typical knife makers, his background includes moto journalism, custom forging, and mechanical invention. Caswell excels in creating tools that are both futuristic and practical.
His collaboration with CRKT introduced Kinematic technology, first seen in the Provoke morphing karambit. He subsequently expanded the line with the Provoke Grivory®, Provoke Aluminum, and Provoke EDC, each advancing the tactical knife concept. Caswell’s designs showcase innovation in blade movement and functionality, emphasizing usability in hand.
Filling a Niche: The Provoke X
The Provoke X fills a niche between knives and full-sized axes. It’s compact enough to carry daily but brutal enough to break through barriers. Its Kinematic deployment and Deadbolt lock make it reliable in high-stakes environments where hesitation isn’t an option. The Provoke X is a tactical breaching and self-defense tool for professionals, not a campfire companion!
