The Shadow Guard Knife Takes Tactical to the Woods

-

Although almost any knife can be used in varied environments, they don’t always perform at their best. The NEXKUT Shadow Guard Knife isn’t one of those knives. This tactical-style knife offers top-tier performance in both rural and urban settings, and luckily, I have one in-hand to test. It appears to be the perfect amalgamation for street-level tactical use and rugged outdoor survival tasks. Does it live up to these high expectations? It absolutely does and goes several steps beyond.

First Impressions

Out of the box, this knife was bold. It offered a large, cordage-wrapped handle and a blade that features an intriguing front-heavy tip. As for the handle, I usually suffer from not having enough grip for the size of my hand. The NEXKUT Shadow Guard eliminated this problem for me thanks to its nearly 5-inch handle.

The cordage wrap was tight, and my grip was secure. A length of cordage was looped at the end of the knife as a wrist wrap or for hanging. The blade was both wide and long, with over five inches of cutting area. Its tip resembled that of a throwing knife, and with good reason. It boasts an amazing piercing ability, which I planned to test later with a variety of natural and manmade materials.

The blade came fairly sharp, out-of-the-box, and the spine showed a noticeable thickness, which to me reinforced its hearty construction.

Brutal Puncturing

The blade of the NEXKUT Shadow Guard offered a unique design with a top-heavy tip and concave-curved cutting edge. The knife’s full tang construction gave me confidence as I forcibly thrust it into the trunk of a palm tree. It dug deep, nearly an inch into the tree.

I followed that up with several stabs into a coconut lying on the ground (trust me, it can be brutal to reach their beneficial insides). The Shadow Guard knife penetrated with solid confidence. It didn’t yield or show any signs of damage to the tip or blade overall under the intense action.

As mentioned, the knife’s tip emulated that of a throwing knife, and its penetration and removal from the material were also very comparable.

Slicing and Chopping Abilities

The Shadow Guard knife’s long, grippy handle allowed me to easily shave down some small logs into usable tinder. It also chopped through hanging foliage like a compact machete.

I was initially skeptical that its concave blade would slice like a traditional straight-edged knife. But after using it in different scenarios, it performed well. In fact, its slightly curved blade was beneficial when batoning. It conformed to the material better than a straight edge and offered greater efficiency and safety.

I’ll keep going back to the tang construction and paracord wrapped handle during my testing. They both allowed me to apply full force and have complete control over the knife within my hand.

Easy Carry Option

The knife came complete with a black Kydex sheath. This solid unit locked the Shadow Guard in place when not in use. No matter how hard I shook it or flipped it around, and even upside down, the knife stayed in place without even a slight shift. I really liked this. Too many times, when outdoors, you must wiggle through dense brush, and sometimes your knife (with a poorly designed sheath) can separate and drop.

Additionally, the knife’s attachment options were quite varied. The easy-to-string sheath allowed easy belt or gear attachment. Hook and loop material on both sides enabled it to secure to similar hook and loop surfaces.

Loving this Versatile Blade

Sometimes you need to ditch the bells and whistles and go back to the basics, and the NEXKUT Shadow Guard is no-frills perfection. Full tang, a solid grip, and a versatile blade all add up to execution in the field. This knife would be at home both on your next campout and as an asset in your urban bugout bag. From the jungle to the concrete jungle, this knife won’t miss a beat.
