Somehow Even Thinner & Lighter

-

To be honest, I am not a fan of writing stories about simple changes to an existing model. However, the new Bugout Vapyr from Benchmade is no simple change, like adding a new color. It is a complete overhaul that somehow made the already lightweight model even slimmer and lighter. I saw the prototype at SHOT Show and was already intrigued. But when I saw the final production model at Blade Show, I was gobsmacked at how thin and light it was.

The Benchmade Bugout Vapyr

I have been carrying the Benchmade Bugout in my regular rotation since its release in 2017. When I first started carrying it, I was blown away at how thin and light it really was. It was a game changer that resulted in immediate popularity, taking the knife industry by storm. Its ultra-thin .42-inch handle and light 1.87 ounces (2.02 ounces for the carbon fiber) disappeared in the pocket. It was unrivaled in EDC.

Until now.

At an overall length of 7.48 inches, the Bugout Vapyr is a Bugout in every way but two. It still carries the 3.25-inch drop-point blade with clean lines and a flat grind. Although the original was constructed from CPM-S30V, it is now available in multiple steel options. However, the new Vapyr features a Magnacut blade. As with the rest of the line, the Bugout Vapyr’s blade is released via an ambidextrous thumbstud, landing in lockup via the Axis Lock.

The biggest change to the Vapyr is its handle. This is not the first time that the Bugout has been offered with a 6061-T6 Anodized Aluminum handle. However, it is the first time that it has only been .282-inches thick. Considering that the thickness of all other Bugouts is .42 inches, this is a huge 33% reduction without sacrificing rigidity.

Likewise, this results in a slight reduction in weight to 1.72 ounces. Although this makes it the lightest Bugout in the lineup, it only slightly beats the Grivory models, which weigh 1.87 ounces. However, it totally outclasses other models in the line that climb to 2.52 ounces.

The deep carry pocket clip provides the highest level of discretion. It is reversible for right- or left-hand carry, but is only configured for tip-up carry only. Finally, the Taiga Green backspacer allows for a lanyard.
