2026 marks 50 years since Spyderco’s founding by Sal and Gail Glesser. The company is marking its anniversary with a number of new releases. One of the new Spyderco knives that immediately caught my eye is the Para 3 Salt. Let’s dig in.
The Spyderco Para 3 Salt
It builds on the outstanding Para 3 platform, which I’m a big fan of. It features increased corrosion resistance and a CPM MagnaCut blade, making it exceptionally capable in demanding environments. Spyderco provided this knife to me at no charge for evaluation, though all opinions expressed here are entirely my own.
The Para 3 is a refinement of Spyderco’s Para Military series. It condenses the proven ergonomics, cutting performance, and reliability of the Para Military 2 into a more compact, everyday‑carry‑friendly format without sacrificing capability. Despite its smaller size, the Para 3 retains the cutting power and control that made its predecessors so successful.

Spyderco provided me with a Para 3 Salt featuring black G‑10 handle scales and a matte‑black DLC‑coated blade made of CPM MagnaCut stainless steel. Its handle hardware is crafted from ultra‑corrosion‑resistant, marine‑grade materials and further protected with durable black coatings.
For those who desire increased visibility and a less tactical look, the Para 3 Salt is also offered with a satin-finished blade and two‑tone G‑10 scales in a black‑and‑yellow “Caribbean” pattern, as well as a lightweight version with yellow FRN scales.

CPM MagnaCut Steel Designed for Real‑World Use
CPM MagnaCut is a powder‑metallurgy stainless steel engineered by professional metallurgist Dr. Larrin Thomas to overcome the traditional trade‑off between toughness, edge retention, and corrosion resistance.
MagnaCut offers an outstanding balance of properties, including high corrosion resistance, excellent toughness, and strong edge retention. Its fine carbide structure allows it to take a very sharp, refined edge. The blade on the Para 3 Salt is heat‑treated to approximately 62–64 HRC.
DLC Coating for Added Protection
The Diamond‑Like Carbon (DLC) coating on the blade provides additional corrosion resistance, increased surface hardness, and increased lubricity (reduced friction) during cutting. The matte‑black finish also minimizes reflections, making it suitable for tactical or low‑visibility applications.

Dimensions and Blade Geometry of the Para 3 Salt
The Para 3 Salt maintains the familiar Para 3 profile with the following specifications: an overall length of 7.24 inches when open, a closed length of 4.29 inches, and a weight of 3.4 ounces. The 2.95‑inch blade features a 2.62‑inch cutting edge and a 0.145‑inch spine thickness. It’s the perfect size for an EDC knife.
The modified clip point blade combines a gentle, slicing‑friendly belly with an acute, well‑centered point that remains highly capable for fine tasks. Its blade features a full‑flat grind, with the bevels running all the way from the spine to the cutting edge.

The full-flat grind reduces drag during cutting and reduces overall weight. It provides an excellent balance of strength, point utility, and low-friction cutting performance. A jimped thumb ramp and index‑finger choil provide secure grip and precise control for detailed tasks. The Salt version is currently available only with the PlainEdge.
The grind of the Para 3 Salt provided to me was clean and even, as expected from Spyderco. Likewise, it came razor-sharp out of the box.
Opening is via Spyderco’s patented Trademark Round Hole, a feature I’m a huge fan of. The Round Hole offers a larger surface area for greater reliability, outperforming studs, disks, and other one-handed opening attachments, even with gloved or wet hands. Additionally, it does not interfere with the cutting action of the blade.

The Round Hole, along with Spyderco’s smooth bushing pivot design and phosphor-bronze washers, enables swift, smooth blade deployment. The blade on the provided knife was perfectly centered.
Handle Construction and Ergonomics
The Para 3 was designed to be slim and pocket‑friendly. As mentioned, the Para 3 Salt features G‑10 scales. G‑10 is a tough, fiberglass‑based epoxy laminate. The scales have radiused edges for comfort and a Bi‑Directional Texture with machined grooves that provide a secure grip without being overly abrasive. They also add an attractive touch.

The knife uses open‑back construction for easy cleaning and nested stainless‑steel liners for strength without unnecessary bulk. The liners are drilled (skeletonized) for weight reduction. Stainless‑steel Torx (star) screws are used to attach the scales and pocket clip, as well as for the blade’s pivot screw. The handle has heavy‑duty, stainless‑steel spacers.
The scales are drilled for all four carry positions—tip‑up or tip‑down, right‑ or left‑handed. This gives the Para 3 Salt full ambidextrous flexibility. It comes equipped with a stainless‑steel hourglass pocket clip, a proven Spyderco design that offers solid retention without adding unnecessary bulk. The clip is slightly angled to reduce pocket imprint. Finally, the handle also features an oversized lanyard hole for fobs, beads, or retention cords.

Compression Lock: Strength and Safety
Spyderco’s patented Compression Lock is one of the strongest and safest locking mechanisms available. It uses a leaf‑spring liner that wedges between the blade tang and stop pin, functioning like an inverted liner lock. The positioning of the lock on top of the spine requires minimal hand movement to operate. This design keeps fingers out of the blade’s path and allows easy one‑handed operation. Lockup is solid with zero blade play.

Testing the Para 3 Salt
Evaluating an everyday‑carry knife means using it as intended—carried daily, opened repeatedly, and put through the practical tasks that define real EDC use. After several weeks of continuous carry, the Para 3 Salt has performed exceptionally well and continues to do so. Granted, a couple of weeks isn’t a long time, but early issues usually reveal themselves if they’re going to.
Deployment remains smooth and consistent whether my hands are dry, sweaty, or cold. The Round Hole provides controlled, reliable opening. Likewise, the Compression Lock delivers secure, repeatable lockup with zero blade play.
Extended use continues to highlight the strengths of the G10 scales. The Para 3’s texture offers confident grip without being abrasive, and the ergonomics prevent hot spots during repeated cutting sessions. Its compact profile makes the knife easy to control in tight spaces and awkward angles—true to Para 3 form.

The clip keeps the knife stable in the pocket, riding securely without shifting or snagging. Combined with the knife’s light weight and slim profile, it’s easy to forget until needed. While the stock Para 3 clip is often criticized for its higher ride height, it does offer a practical advantage. More handle above the pocket line allows faster, more reliable retrieval, even with gloves or cold hands.
Edge retention has been excellent, as expected. The blade maintains a keen edge through typical EDC tasks—opening packages, cutting tape, trimming cordage, slicing cardboard, and general utility work. The full flat grind slices efficiently, and the edge has shown no chipping or rolling.

Daily carry introduces the usual pocket lint and environmental exposure, yet the knife continues to resist wear and corrosion. The pivot stays smooth with only light cleaning, the lock mechanism remains consistent, and no hardware loosening or structural concerns have appeared.
A Capable Compact EDC Knife
The Para 3 Salt ergonomics, performance, and corrosion‑proof construction make it one of the most capable compact EDC knives available. Its popularity reflects that, and the Salt version only strengthens its appeal. Fit and finish on the sample I received was flawless. Spyderco has a clear winner in the Para 3 Salt.
The MSRP for the Spyderco Para 3 Salt is $288.00. Like all Spyderco knives, it’s covered by the Spyderco Limited Lifetime Warranty.
